Pakistan not to reopen Nato supply routes for now

Hawaii State News.Net Wednesday 18th April, 2012

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan will not reopen, at least for now, key supply routes for US-led Nato troops in Afghanistan that have remained closed since November last year.

A key decision over the issue could not be taken at a review meeting of Defence Committee of the Cabinet, Pakistan's top decision-making body on national security that had ruled to block the Nato supplies in November 2011 after US fighter jets struck border posts and killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Media reports quoting unnamed sources said the decision has been postponed until new terms of engagement were renegotiated with the US that will also include a work plan to reset bilateral ties in the war on terror in Afghanistan.

Leading Urdu daily Jang reported Wednesday that the meeting "linked the decision with certain positive steps from the US".

"The decision was deferred for the sake of national interest after some senior military leaders expressed reservations," the Jang report said.

It said Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told the meeting that fundamentals of Pakistan's policy parameters on counter-terrorism ties should include new "roadmap for re-engagement with the US, negotiation of new terms and conditions for resumption of the ground lines of communication" for Nato supplies .

Gilani also said the US should exhibit "greater transparency about its diplomatic and intelligence activities in Pakistan" and should not use Pakistan's territory for attacks on other countries".
